George Russell has revealed that he was able to claim pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix by observing Lewis Hamilton, a teammate in Mercedes-Benz F1 racing.

In a drier final practice hour at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Mercedes emerged as the team to beat, but Hamilton finished nearly four tenths ahead of Mercedes at the top.

But this time, Russell did the opposite of his famous partner and beat Max Verstappen in a dead heat, while Hamilton fell to seventh, 0.280s behind.

The Briton has explained how Hamilton was able to get on pace by investigating how Hamilton had gained such a significant advantage in FP3.

“I needed to look a great deal into his information to attempt to comprehend what he was doing any other way.

What’s more, frankly, that helped me an immense sum. “Ahead of qualifying, I’m just so glad we were able to pull it off because I think we really deserve all of the effort we’ve put in.

“Furthermore, the vehicle has been feeling marvelous this end of the week.”

In recent weeks, Mercedes has taken an aggressive approach to development, and the W15’s improved balance was helped by a revised front wing in Monaco.

The team’s first pole position since the Hungarian Grand Prix last summer, Russell believes, will motivate Mercedes to keep closing the gap.

Russell exclaimed, “Such a buzz.” We haven’t had this experience in a long time.

“It has taken a little while to be able to sort of get back in the fight because there is so much hard work going on behind the scenes back at Brackley and Brixworth.

“It almost seemed as though all that hard work hadn’t been paying off.”

Russell is persuaded that the German manufacturer is currently focusing on the optimal performance range after overcoming its previous issues with ground effect cars.

He elaborated, “I think we struggled a lot with understeer before.”

We’ve been trying to find a middle ground between what we had last year and what we had this year because we had a lot of oversteer last year.

Additionally, it appears as though we are currently dialing in that sweet spot.

Sincerely, it seems like something we’ve been saying for a long time. However, it truly brings a sense of relief to see it achieve pole position.
